How to charge batteries?

We will walk through the process of charging all the different components that come with your Commander 2 and 3xl.

There are 4 components to the Commander 2 and 3xl system that require charging prior to use.

  • RC controller unit. This is installed in the basestation case. It charges via a micro-usb port on the botton side of the controller. While charging the power button with be illuminated green, the green light will go out when charging is complete. The controller can be removed by loosening the thumbscrew on the holding clamp and flipping the clamp out of the way.

The battery life of the controller unit is several hours. When the controller is powered on the battery voltage is shown on the main screen. It is recommended to recharge this when then voltage goes below 7.2v

  • Base station battery. This is installed in the basestation case. A dedicated wall adapter is provided to charge the battery. Unplug the battery from the basestation electronics and plug the wall adapter into the same port. Be sure to turn the battery on while charging.

The provided battery will run the basestation for several hours. It is recommended to recharge the battery when there are 3 lights shown on fuel gauge. We have seen several of these battery packs where the fuel gauge is poorly calibrated and will shut down with 3 lights on.

  • Tablet (if installed). There is a tablet installed in the lid of the basestation to run the ground control software. This charges via a USB connection on the bottom. Tablet run time is several hours.   The tablet can be removed by releasing the “twist lock” near the top of the lid.
  • Flight batteries:
    • For the Commander 2 a dedicated charger is provided for charging the flight batteries. The batteries must be charged a 4s LiHV. A charge current of 6A is recommended.
    • For the Commander 3xl a dedicated charger is provided for charging the flight batteries. The batteries must be charged a 12s LiHV. A charge current of 11A is recommended.
