The commander 2/3xl has two basic flight modes configured by default, Altitude Hold and Loiter.
In Altitude Hold mode the controls function as follows:
- Throttle control – controls vertical speed. Releasing to center will cause the aircraft to automatically maintain altitude
- Yaw control – controls yaw speed. Releasing to center will cause the aircraft to maintain its current heading
- Pitch control – controls pitch attitude, the angle at which the aircraft is tilted forward/backward. Releasing this control will cause the pitch axis to return to level
- Roll control – controls roll attitude, the angle at which the aircraft is rolled left/right. Releasing this control will cause the roll axis to return to level
In altitude hold mode the aircraft WILL NOT hold its position. It is up to the pilot to adjust the attitude angles to maintain position.
In Loiter mode the controls function as follows:
- Throttle control/Yaw control – same as altitude hold mode
- Pitch/roll control. Controls the lateral speed of the aircraft. When both of these controls are returned to center the aircraft will attempt to hold it position.
Loiter mode is the easiest to use, but requires a good GPS lock and compass calibration to operate. Altitude hold mode is useful for flying without GPS or to recover from an error such as a GPS outage.
How to get flying:
- Select the desired flight mode (Altitude hold or Loiter). Takeoff in loiter requires a good GPS lock (HDOP <1.4). You can switch between these modes while in flight.
- Hold the left control stick down and to the right to arm the aircraft. Once the motors have started spinning the aircraft is armed, return left stick to center
- Raise the throttle until the aircraft reaches the desired altitude.
- Fly around, execute mission, etc.
Landing:
- Bring aircraft to a stable hover either manually in altitude hold mode or automatically in loiter mode
- Reduce altitude until aircraft touches the ground. Reduce vertical speed a few meters before touchdown
- Hold the left stick down and to the left to disarm the aircraft
